Tango Therapeutics is at the forefront of cancer treatment research. Their novel genetic approach develops medicines that target cancerous tumor cells while sparing healthy tissues. Along the way, the company has experienced a dramatic expansion, causing a relocation to the 201 Brookline Avenue location in Boston’s Fenway neighborhood.

Having designed the company’s original headquarters at 100 Binney Street in 2017, VIVO is well versed in Tango’s company culture and work styles. As discussions started for the master planning of the new headquarters, the design team was able to leverage this experience and evaluate the previous facility to determine a targeted work plan. This was an opportunity to improve on a plan that generally worked well but had some drawbacks due to space constraints. In general, both meeting space and storage space was at a premium and required a substantial increase.

With a 65,000 RSF suite located on the 8th floor and half of the 9th floor, the new space accommodates the company’s current population and expected growth for several years into the future. A subtenant suite was designed to be seamlessly reintegrated back into the main suite when required. The laboratory spaces were integral to the design, and VIVO worked closely with the science team to identify critical adjacencies and workflow throughout the different lab areas. The design solution allows for maximum flexibility of the lab layout while maintaining common facilities and specialty rooms that are specific to their process accessible to all science staff.

To help integrate the population divided between the two floors, a connecting stair was developed to tie the main reception area with the large breakroom and library below. To underline the stair’s function, a large platform with seating and plantings provides additional opportunities for meeting and socializing. The interior design is reflective of the company brand, reinforcing the corporate palette while adding softer tones and natural elements.
